A 870 will work but of course it is not the most ideal. A semi auto will be much faster. Still many people start with the 870 and shoot the 870 as it is what they already own. I would say if you already got a 870 or have your heart set on a 870 go for it. Everyone should have a 870 as they are cool, fun to shoot, and a excellent home defense gun.

You want just a regular bead sight, preferably a vent rib. Short 18" or 21" barrel. No rifle sight, no ghost rings, nothing longer than 21". The 870's that you find at big 5 on sale the 18" bead sight shotgun are what most people get/own. If you can get one with a barrel that takes choke tubes that would be best. You'll pay more money and it'll probably come in 21" but it's a much better shotgun for what we do.

If you want a semi auto the two I recommend are the benelli and the remington 1100 or 11/87. Either case you want a 21" vent rib.
